I want to create an animation that can define visually the state of mind in its various forms.  By this I mean to create a dialogue that describes a person feeling throughout a course of a day for example. The visuals themselves will be animated photographs of various close ups, extreme close ups,  mid shots, long shots, shades of colour, different locations, gritty, gloomy and focal. However I will be hitting upon as many styles as possible but as my own way of animating is very at the time it’s hard to just write it down. The actual dialogue will be a fictional based on a depressive male/female working along the lines of waking up to trudging through the day to finally getting some peace when he/she goes to sleep.

The main element within the film will be the voyage or passage of a white miniature sail boat. This I have carved out of a small piece of wood painted and added a sail. Its main purpose is to give the effect of various states of calm through to chaos as if it was actually on the sea. For example if the dialogue was despair with a tiny element of calm within it I could show this by using a pool of stagnant water and moving round within that space.

This information is taken from a blog site about various stages of depression. I don’t want to move into thoughts of suicide as I feel this would be to bleak and I don’t want my film to be that heavy on the issue.  I feel I can relate to some of the below issues thus enabling me to draw inspiration from some of my mild experiences.

Feeling hopeless

Becoming irritated for no reason

Anger and frustration

Loss of interest in favorite activities

Change in eating habits

Change in sleeping habits

The Stages of Depression

While the American Psychological Association doesn't define clear stages of depression, there does seem to be a pattern among the way that depression progresses among people. Here are the basic issues that may lead to depression in many people:

Feeling frustrated or overwhelmed – When life begins to become burdensome, you can begin to have troubles dealing with the emotions that come along with this anxiety.

Sense of sadness at the way things are – Feeling like everything is out of control, you begin to feel sad and despondent.

Loss of interest in things you enjoy – You begin to isolate yourself from others and from the things you love to do.

Changes in eating and sleeping – You might begin to change the way you eat and the way you sleep as a way to cope with the burdens of your feelings.

Feelings of hopelessness – As you continue to feel bad, you might begin to see things as hopeless and beyond your control. You begin to not care about anything. You might stop bathing or handling even mundane tasks.
